Mobilyse say:

The Samsung Galaxy S5, the year’s most eagerly awaited new smartphone, has finally arrived. Thankfully, here at Mobilyse, we have connections in all the right places, so we were able to get our mitts on the Galaxy S5 before its official release date on April 11. So, is it all much ado about nothing, or is the S5 the new smartphone package of our dreams.

Design: inspired or insipid?

We wouldn’t want to accuse the Samsung designers of laziness, but it’s plain for all to see where they sought their inspiration. The S5 is a doppelganger for the S4, with its shiny, ridged silvery trim, steep sides and rounded edges. There are some subtle differences worth a mention. The home button has a friendlier, more rounded design than the rectangular S4, the back panel motif is new, and there are two new colour options, with copper and bright blue hues joining the established Shimmery White and Charcoal Black.

For those of you who are prone to dropping your phone down the toilet after a couple of non-alcoholic cocktails, there’s good news. The Galaxy S5 is both dustproof (whatever that means) and waterproof to a depth of 3 feet for up to 30 minutes. So, if your S5 does go in the drink, it will live to fight another day without spending a month on life support in the airing cupboard.

A high-end performer

The Galaxy S5 has all the high-end gubbins you would expect from Samsung’s flagship handset. First off, there’s the 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chip which is the proverbial dog’s bollokovs and makes this baby operate faster than the speed of lightski! Then there’s the 16-megapixel rear-facing camera, which we’ll wax lyrical about a little later in the review, and a 2-megapixel snapper on the front.

As with past editions of Samsung’s Galaxy series, there are 16GB and 32GB storage options, along with a microSD card which supports a mind numbing 128GB (that’s a whole lot of Russian folk music, comrades!). The S5 also delivers 2GB RAM, along with a Download Booster which combines Wi-Fi and LTE to download items up to a speed of 600-650Mbps. The S5 is also fully loaded with the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system, which takes performance to an all-time high.

New additions

They’re not so much new features, as Apple, Motorola and HTC have already rolled out the fingerprint and heart rate scanners, but they’re a first on a Samsung, so it’s well worth checking them out. You can add three fingerprint profiles, along with a backup password in case your S5 gets confused. We found the scanner, located just above the home button, to work well with no problems to speak of. There’s also a new feature unique to Galaxy S5 owners, which, thanks, to a partnership with PayPal, allows users to authenticate transactions with the press of a finger.

Let’s talk hardware

We were expecting great things from the S5’s display, largely due to its pre-release hype, so their disappointment was palpable when they encountered a screen with a few less pixels than before. The screen is a 1080p full HD Super AMOLED version, which is sharp, vibrant and clearly a step on from the S4 when compared directly. However, the screen is now 5.1, rather than 5 inches, reducing your pixels per inch from 441ppi to 432ppi on the new version. Still, movies looked great and the colour reproduction just rocked! It was amongst the best we have seen.

The 16-megapixel rear snapper features a new addition, which the boffins at Samsung like to call ‘Phase Detection’ autofocus, which has never before been seen on a smartphone. This delivers an autofocus which performs three times faster than the S4, at just 0.3 seconds, capable of snapping even the nimblest squirrel as it bolts up a tree. Great for people with kids! You may just be able to capture that awesome shot before your toddler has a tantrum. There’s also a new on-screen control camera app which allows you to preview your handiwork on real-time HDR, before you commit. Talking of HDR, the technology in the S5 is more sophisticated than ever before, producing pin sharp snaps you can be proud of.

The Galaxy S5 sports a 2,800mAh battery, which whilst not the juiciest you will ever encounter, is an improvement on the S4’s 2,600mAh power provider. However, the phone is now bigger, so in terms of longevity, you can expect about the same amount of talk for your ticker, which Samsung claim is a generous 21 hours of talk time.

All in all…

Whilst not mind blowing, the Galaxy S5 is a fitting addition to the Samsung legacy of high-end smartphones. Revolutionary it’s not, but there are just about enough new toys to warrant an upgrade once your contract expires.

Buy if: You’re looking for one of the best performing smartphones on the market and can’t wait for the HTC One 2.

Don’t buy if: You’re growing tired of Samsung sameness and expect a radical new look and feel from the S5.
