Mobilyse say:

Well, it is finally here. The iPhone 6 Plus is Apple’s first oversized smartphone with a whopping 5.5-inch display. However, will its bigger form go down well with devote Apple fans? And can it compete with more established phablets? Find out with our Apple iPhone 6 Plus review.

Design

Apple has labelled this device “Plus” for a reason; it’s huge! Tall but still incredibly light, the iPhone 6 Plus is arguably the best looking “phablet” around with its rounded edges and curved glass. Then again, you wouldn’t expect anything less from the tech world’s king of design. Some may find it a bit too big, but those waiting for an oversized iPhone will be jumping up and down with glee.

If you had to criticise it in any way, the protruding camera might annoy perfectionists while using the iPhone 6 Plus with one hand is a little difficult. Its ‘reachability’ feature brings content down to the bottom half of the screen, but this isn’t an ideal solution. Overall though, smartphone design doesn’t get better than this.

Pixel perfect?

The main reasons for developing a phone this size is to provide consumers with an expansive and immersive screen. The iPhone 6 Plus doesn’t disappoint, as its 5.5-inch display boasts a full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. The LED-backlit display provides superb viewing angles and the IPS panel delivers bright, vibrant colours. Apple also claims that the screen benefits from a fingerprint-resistant coating. But in spite of these plus points, the Samsung Galaxy S5’s Super AMOLED display is probably a shade better.

Under the bonnet

You may be a bit surprised to hear that the iPhone 6 Plus is only running a 1.39GHz dual-core A8 processor with 64-bit architecture and 1GB of RAM. But those clever boys and girls at Apple manage to integrate iOS with the internal components of this device.

While this delivers ample speed and a strong performance, it probably isn’t as quick as Android alternatives. On top of that, apps sometimes crash and close for no apparent reason, which is far from ideal, especially for Apple’s new flagship device.

Smooth operator?

With the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple has been able to introduce a few improvements and enhancements to iOS 8. In addition to the ever present notifications bar and control panel, which is easy and more comprehensive given the bigger screen, home page icons can also be increased in size or viewed in landscape mode.

Apple has also made it easier to reply to messages and make phone calls. Simply drag down the notification to enter reply mode or double click the home key to see shortcuts of your most popular contacts.

Say cheeeese!

Updated front and rear cameras provide even greater quality and functionality. Again, the rear 8-megapixel shooter might sound substandard, but Apple has added optical image stabilisation and longer exposures to bring about sharp and precise images.

Video stabilisation and real-time autofocus means that moving images are incredibly impressive too. The front-facing camera has also been upgraded to improve low-light performance. But in spite of these additional features and extras, Apple has kept things simple and with the iPhone 6 Plus, taking great shots is a doddle.

Staying power

Battery life has been one of the iPhone’s biggest problems over the years and has caused much frustration among several users. But we are overjoyed to announce that the iPhone 6 Plus has addressed this issue with a much improved power source.

Apple says you can enjoy 12 hours of web browsing time, 14 hours of video playback and a massive 80 hours of music playback. Having said that, there is still no power saving mode and wireless charging has been reserved for the Apple Watch only. Still, the 6 Plus seems like it will last a lot longer than previous iPhones. Hurrah!

The verdict

It might not be the fastest or feature-packed phablet on the market, but the iPhone 6 Plus is Apple’s most impressive cellular device to date. If you’re not a fan of its sizeable form, the iPhone 6 will suffice. However, paying a little bit extra for a better battery, better camera and better display is well worth it.

Buy if: You want the biggest and best iPhone yet

Don’t buy if: You prefer compactness and convenience to power and performance
